Already drawing the crowds in the South American resort of San Alfonso del Mar in Chile, this artificial lagoon and swimming pool is eight hectares in size and contains an incredible 250,000 cubic meters of water. Acknowledged by Guinness World Records as being the world’s largest swimming pool, the lagoon trounces all other record holders in the category, including the Orthlieb pool in Casablanca, Morocco, itself a huge 150 meters by 100 meters – the San Alfonso pool is 1km in length. The revolutionary clear water artificial lagoons, transparent to a depth of 35 meters and unprecedented in design and construction methods, are the brainchild of Crystal Lagoons founder, biochemist and Chilean businessman Fernando Fischmann. Equivalent in size to an incredible 6,000 standard domestic pools, details of its technology are to be unveiled for the first time at Cityscape Dubai later this month.

Worlds Largest Swimming Pool
The pool has two large flat-bottomed areas at depth levels of 5m (16 ft) and 10m (32 ft), and a large circular pit descending to a depth of 33m (108 ft). It is filled with 2,500,000 litres of non-chlorinated, highly filtered spring water maintained at 30°C (86°F) and contains several simulated underwater caves at the 10m depth level.

There are numerous underwater windows that allow outside visitors to look into the pools at various depths. The complex was designed by Belgian diving expert John Beernaerts as a multi-purpose diving instruction, recreational, and film production facility, and opened in 2004.

Worlds Largest Indoor Swimming Pool

A total of 500 people dived underwater at the pool, in Acton, for the world record bid, reports the Daily Telegraph. They were aiming to get into the Book of Guinness World Records and raise thousands of pounds for charity. There was also the chance of a free, three-course gourmet lunch. Diners enjoyed smoked salmon and candied lemon starters, a main course of crab with asparagus, followed by wafer-thin mints. However, because of the practical difficulties of eating underwater, each course consisted of just one mouthful of food. Tim Slater, 40, organiser of the record attempt, had experimented with scientific solutions. "We got space food from NASA through the international space school in Cardiff," he said. "It did say just add water, but perhaps a whole swimming pool was too much.   " Instead, he decided on sealing each course, or mouthful, in a waterproof coating of jelly to keep them from disintegrating or floating away. Divers wore heavy diving belts to keep themselves in their seats and briefly removed the air regulators from their mouths to swallow their 'meals'.
